About the popular Mexican Posadas In Pre- Columbian Mexico a ceremony was held to remember the birth of Huitzilopochtli, the “God of War”, from December 17 to December 26. When the Spanish priests arrived in the new Continent, they tried to attract the Indians to their religion, and started by “Las Posadas”, the story of St Joseph and the Virgin Mary going from Nazareth to Bethlehem for a census ordered by the government.. To make it attractive to the natives, they used to sing remembering the challenges the “Holy Family” or pilgrims had faced on that trip…… Baby Jesus was to be born, and due to the census, a lot of people were traveling so there was no room to sleep in, and that is the reason why they asked for POSADA…,(Spanish for “Inn” )The only place they found was a stable, where Jesus was born. To celebrate after the singing, participants used to break a Piñata in the shape of a 7-points star representing the 7 capital sins. The priests tried to convey their message through fun… they made the Indians break the Piñata with a stick, and inside there were fruit and candies meaning there was reward for those who controlled their sinful behavior…Today, Mexican families and friends, get together during 8 days before Christmas, remembering the religious passage that has become a very strong tradition in this country.
